Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover. Cathedral ceilings turn up in family rooms and primary suites from Valley Brook Farms to Cumberland Village, and screened porches and decks sit behind many houses from the 1980s and 1990s. Sunrooms are common on Granby Drive, Yorkshire Boulevard West, Maxim Court and Olivine Avenue. On the newest streets, two story great rooms and flex rooms with French doors sit beside open kitchens. I agree to be contacted by Cumberland Window Treatments regarding my inquiry.

Cumberland sits on the Marion and Hancock County line, and the housing shows it. The old plat from 1831 and its Folk Victorian and Bungalow houses are on the Marion side, where the National Register district counts 91 contributing buildings. East of there, Cumberland Heights has brick ranches from 1966 and 1969, and Valley Brook Farms, Harvest Glen and Hartman Farms add ranches and a few two stories from 1980 to 1996. Glen Oaks Village and Cumberland Village hold larger two story and masonry houses from 1990 to 1993, some with more than 4,000 square feet. Autumn Woods brings two stories from 2007 to 2018 on the north edge. The newest streets are Grant's Corner and Rockridge, where houses from 2024 to 2026 run from a 1,632 square foot villa to plans above 3,500 square feet, and most of the town's land lies in Hancock County.

We measure for outside mount when the depth isn't there, when the opening is badly out of square, or when you want the light controlled properly. Outside mount means the product is sized to cover the opening plus an overlap on each side and above, so the finished dimensions are bigger than the window. It changes how the Cumberland room reads, and it changes the price, so it's a conversation rather than a default.

The follow-up we care about is the one at the six month mark, when the product has been through a season. Did the shade in the bright room hold its color? Is the cordless lift still holding position? Did the composite shutter in the bath stay flat? Those answers tell us whether we specified correctly, and if we didn't, we'd rather hear it from a Cumberland customer than not.

Built in the Last Few Years?

Many of our Cumberland customers moved into a house built by one of these companies. Builder blinds are usually stock sizes trimmed to fit, so if yours came with the house and never ran right, that is why. We measure the openings as built rather than off the plan.

What We Are Running in Cumberland Right Now

Both offers apply to work quoted and ordered while they are posted here. Ask about them at the in-home measure and we will put the discount on the written quote before you decide anything.

Offer 1

$500 Off Your First Exterior Screen, Plus a Free Motorization Upgrade

Take $500 off your first exterior screen and we will add the motorization upgrade at no charge. Exterior screens stop solar heat outside the glass, which is the only place you can stop it before it is already in the room, and a motor is the difference between using one and forgetting it.

Applies to a first exterior screen. Ask at the measure so the discount is on the written quote before you order. Motorized product runs on batteries that need replacing, about a year on Hunter Douglas PowerView.

Offer 2

Free Motorization Upgrade on Select Interior Shades

Pick from the qualifying interior shade lines and the motorization upgrade is free. It is worth most on the openings you would otherwise leave alone: tall great room glass, anything above a stair, and the west windows nobody remembers to close by four.

Select interior shade lines only. We will tell you at the measure which of your openings qualify. Batteries are a real running cost and are not included.

Flexible Financing

Payment Options That Work for You

A window covering project is worth doing right the first time. Financing options through Cumberland Window Treatments lender partners help you pay over time instead of cutting scope or delaying the work.

Deferred Payment Plans

Start the work now and begin paying later. On a whole-house order this is how people phase a large job without phasing the install.

  • Payments deferred for a promotional period
  • Rate and period set by the lender
  • Quoted price held for the order
Equal Payment Plans

Divide the project cost into equal monthly payments across a fixed promotional period, so the budget is predictable from day one.

  • Equal monthly payments
  • Fixed promotional period
  • Simple, predictable budgeting
Long-Term Financing

Spread a larger window treatment project across a longer term with fixed equal payments, for homeowners who want the lowest monthly amount.

  • Extended terms available
  • Fixed equal payments
  • Suited to larger window treatment projects
Ask About Financing

Financing is arranged through third party lenders and is subject to credit approval. Rates, terms, and promotional periods are set by the lender and disclosed to you in writing before you sign. Ask your project lead which programs are open right now.

What Cumberland Homeowners Call Us For

From one room to a whole house, Cumberland Window Treatments measures every opening, orders it custom, and installs it with the same crew that took the measurements.

Faux Wood Blinds in Cumberland

Price on faux wood moves with width, not with taste. A standard 2 inch slat in a common white costs what it costs, while extra-wide Cumberland spans and a routeless slat push the number up. Nationally, custom treatments run roughly $250 to $2,600 per window and there's no local published figure.

Learn more

Wood Blinds in Cumberland

If the window sits over a tub or in a room that goes unheated part of the year, don't buy wood. Composite gives you the same 2 inch profile without the movement, and we'd rather say that at your Cumberland measure than argue about a warped slat later.

Learn more

Vertical Blinds in Cumberland

Humidity does nothing to a vinyl vane, and that's the quiet advantage in a Cumberland walkout where a wood product would be a mistake. Fabric vanes are stiffened, and through the muggy stretch from late May to late September they can relax slightly at the hem.

Learn more

Aluminum Mini Blinds in Cumberland

Openings in older Cumberland homes aren't square, and a 1 inch blind hides less of that than a wider slat does. We set the brackets to the frame, check the bottom rail against the sill and adjust before we leave rather than after you call.

Learn more

Roller Shades in Cumberland

Roller shades belong where you want the window to look like a window. Raised, the whole thing disappears into a cassette, so a Cumberland kitchen or a front room keeps its full glass and its view, and there's nothing stacked across the top of the frame.

Learn more

Solar Shades in Cumberland

Here's the part that surprises people after dark. A screen giving you a one-way view at three in the afternoon reverses completely at nine at night with the lamps on, and a Cumberland street can see in. If the room needs evening privacy, it needs a second layer.

Learn more

Cellular Shades in Cumberland

Dust settles inside the cells and a vacuum on low is the only good way to get it out. Compressed air works too. What doesn't work is scrubbing, because the fabric is bonded and a wet cell dries with a mark that stays in a Cumberland living room.

Learn more

Zebra Shades in Cumberland

Against a plain roller you gain a second setting and give up simplicity. Against a sheer shade you gain a sharper look at a lower price. In a Cumberland front room that gets used all day, that second setting's what people end up valuing most.

Learn more

Roman Shades in Cumberland

Custom fabric treatments nationally run roughly $300 to $4,000 per window depending on the cloth and the size. A Roman in a mid-priced fabric on a standard Cumberland window sits well under the top of that range. Local installed pricing isn't published anywhere.

Learn more

Woven Wood Shades in Cumberland

Say this before the order rather than after: an unlined woven wood hides very little. It filters light beautifully and gives you almost no privacy, and after dark with the lamps on a Cumberland room is visible from the street. A liner isn't optional if privacy matters.

Learn more

Blackout Shades in Cumberland

Winter is when blackout does the least, because a Cumberland evening's dark by six anyway. What a closed blackout shade adds in January is a still layer at the cold glass. Cellular does that better if winter comfort rather than darkness is the real problem.

Learn more

Plantation Shutters in Cumberland

Shutters outlive everything else we'll hang. A painted composite panel in a Cumberland house will still be square when the blinds elsewhere have been replaced twice. What fails is hardware: a hinge screw pulling loose, or a louver pin working its way out.

Learn more

Cafe Shutters in Cumberland

Here's the limit nobody mentions. The top half stays uncovered, so afternoon glare and summer sun come straight in over the panels. If a Cumberland room has a heat or a glare complaint alongside the privacy one, cafe shutters are solving half of it.

Learn more

Motorized Shades in Cumberland

Ask what happens when the internet drops. A local hub keeps schedules running with the router down, while a cloud-only setup leaves a Cumberland homeowner holding a remote that won't do anything, and that difference matters more than any feature printed on the box.

Learn more

Custom Drapery in Cumberland

Panels stacked open still occupy wall. If the rod doesn't run past the trim, an open Cumberland panel sits over the glass and eats your view along with your daylight, so we extend the rod on both sides and size the return so the stack lands on wall.

Learn more

Valances & Top Treatments in Cumberland

Top treatments are almost always outside mount, which means the finished width isn't the window width. It's the opening plus the overlap on each side plus both returns, and getting that wrong on a Cumberland order gives you a cornice that stops short of the trim.

Learn more

Exterior Solar Shades in Cumberland

Exterior solar shades for Cumberland patios, porches and west elevations. Stopping the sun outside the glass is the only way to stop the heat before it is already in the room. Motorized and manual, in mesh rated for outdoor UV, anchored to structure rather than to trim.

Learn more

Retractable Awnings in Cumberland

Awnings work best on high sun. At midday in July an awning over a Cumberland south wall throws real shade, and by five in the afternoon the sun's low enough to come in under the front bar, which is where a drop valance or a side screen earns its keep.

Learn more

Commercial Window Treatments in Cumberland

Coordination with other trades decides the sequence. Shade brackets want to land after ceilings and before final finishes, and a Cumberland project that installs too early collects damage while one that installs too late fights everybody else for the same space. We'll get into the schedule early.

Learn more

Skylight Shades in Cumberland

Skylights come in shapes that never appear on a wall: trapezoids over a stairwell, triangles under a gable, long narrow runs. Each one is a custom template rather than a size off a chart, so a Cumberland order for these takes measuring time that a rectangle doesn't.

Learn more

Sliding Glass Door Blinds in Cumberland

A door treatment gaps at the edges like any other. Lutron publishes 3/4 inch per side on the Roller 20/64 with a 1/16 inch per side factory deduction, and across a wide Cumberland slider those two bright lines are more visible than they'd be on a small window.

Learn more

Panel Track Blinds in Cumberland

Panel track and drapery aren't really competing. Drapery softens a room and absorbs sound while panels stay flat and architectural, so a Cumberland great room sometimes takes panels on the working slider and stationary fabric at the corners rather than choosing between them.

Learn more

Sheer Shades in Cumberland

These are made to order, so two to five weeks is the expectation and none of that's negotiable. A Cumberland order also needs the vane size and the mount type locked before release, since both are built into the shade rather than adjusted afterward.

Learn more

Pleated Shades in Cumberland

A roller gives you one flat surface, and a pleated shade doesn't, it gives you texture and a softer edge. On a modern Cumberland room the roller usually wins, and on a room with painted trim and traditional casing the folds sit more comfortably against the architecture.

Learn more

Bamboo Shades in Cumberland

The bottom rail on a woven shade is usually a wrapped hembar that keeps the weave hanging straight. It's also the part that takes every knock, so on a Cumberland door or a high traffic window we'd rather spec a sturdier rail than the lightest option available.

Learn more

Dual Shades in Cumberland

Banded fabrics run in dye lots, and the sheer sections show tonal variation more than solid weaves do. If a Cumberland house is getting these in stages, order the whole set together, because a second batch on the same wall won't quite agree in daylight.

Learn more

Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades in Cumberland

Bathrooms on a side elevation are the best argument for this shade. A Cumberland bath can hold the bottom closed permanently and run the top open for daylight, and the room gets natural light all day without a single moment of exposure to whoever's next door.

Learn more

Cordless Blinds in Cumberland

Cordless blinds across Cumberland. No lift cord, no continuous loop, nothing hanging within reach. Inner-cord non-compliance is a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3, and cordless lift removes the question entirely in homes with young children or pets.

Learn more

Hardwood Shutters in Cumberland

The word hardwood does a lot of work in this category. Some lines mean solid basswood throughout, others mean a hardwood face over an engineered core, and the price gap explains why. Ask what's actually inside the stile before you sign anything, in Cumberland or anywhere else.

Learn more

Composite Shutters in Cumberland

The alternative worth pricing is a faux wood blind. It shrugs off a humid Cumberland bathroom the same way and costs a fraction as much, and it stacks up out of the way when you want the whole opening. What you're giving up is the fitted look and the fact that shutters stay put.

Learn more

Smart Home Shade Integration in Cumberland

Wireless congestion is real in a dense Cumberland neighborhood. Zigbee and Thread share the 2.4 GHz band with everything else in the house, so channel selection and hub placement matter. Z-Wave sits on a different band and dodges that crowd, and that's sometimes exactly why we pick it.

Learn more

Blind Repair & Restring in Cumberland

A cord lock is a small mechanism with a pin and a spring inside the headrail. When it stops grabbing, the blind slides down on its own, which is annoying rather than fatal. It's a bench-level part swap on most Cumberland blinds, and it comes off the headrail without disturbing the mount.

Learn more

Shutter Repair in Cumberland

Pets and kids find the bottom louvers. A dog that pushes through to see the yard bends the lowest louvers on a Cumberland panel, and those specific louvers can often be replaced individually while the rest of the shutter stays exactly as it's.

Learn more

Motorization Retrofit in Cumberland

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. Retrofits are quoted per shade or as a project across a house. There's no meaningful published range for this work because the price depends on what your existing hardware turns out to be, so a Cumberland quote comes after the inspection. Anyone giving you a number over the phone is guessing.

Learn more

Outdoor Patio Shades in Cumberland

Fabric color changes what you'll see. A dark mesh cuts glare hardest and keeps the view crisp, while a light mesh bounces more heat but hazes the yard and can glow when the sun hits it directly. Most Cumberland porches end up dark on the view side and lighter elsewhere.

Learn more

Office Window Treatments in Cumberland

Conference rooms want a second answer. Screen-share sessions and video walls need a room-darkening or blackout layer that a glare fabric can't provide, so a Cumberland suite often ends with solar shades on the open floor and a dual system in the rooms that present.

Learn more

Healthcare Window Treatments in Cumberland

Closeout documentation is what the next facilities manager inherits. A Cumberland project should end with an opening schedule, the fabric and hardware named per room, control locations and the approved submittal package, so a replacement five years out is an order and isn't an investigation.

Learn more

Multifamily Window Treatments in Cumberland

Lead time on a lease-up has to be worked backwards from the certificate date. A large Cumberland order occupies production longer than the two to five weeks a residential job takes, so the shade package belongs in the construction schedule, and it's a long-lead item.

About Us

Local Expertise, Real Results

We'll build your Cumberland window treatment plan around the openings in your own house.

Cumberland Window Treatments takes window covering work throughout Cumberland and Marion County, including the openings people give up on. Arches over an entry. Stairwell landings nobody can reach. Sliders eight feet wide. Corners where two windows meet with an inch of trim between them. Those are regular work rather than special cases, and most of them have a straightforward answer once somebody has actually looked at the opening.

U.S. 40, the old National Road, is the main road through Cumberland. It runs about 10 miles west to downtown Indianapolis and about 10 miles east to Greenfield. The town's center sits in Marion County, but most of its land lies in Hancock County, and the service area covers both sides of the line. Marion County addresses belong to Warren Township schools, while the Hancock County side splits between Mt Vernon schools to the north and New Palestine schools to the south, depending on the township.

Your Cumberland project starts with the rooms you want to change. We'll ask what isn't working at the windows and look at how the light moves through your house. Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover. We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones.

Our Promise

We'll explain the mounting choice before you order for your Cumberland home. If a product won't clear a handle or fit the available depth, we'll work through the options with you at the window.

Why Cumberland Chooses Us

What You Get From a Cumberland In-Home Measure

Serving Cumberland and Marion County with quality materials, thorough inspections, and transparent pricing.

A plan based on the local housing

Cumberland's housing spans Folk Victorian houses on the 1831 plat, 1960s brick ranches, 1990s two stories and new builds from 2024 to 2026 in Grant's Corner and Rockridge.

Measurements for your own frames

We'll check each opening in your Cumberland home and look at the room available for the hardware. If a window has been changed since the house was built, the plan needs to work with the frame that's there today.

Samples viewed in your rooms

We'll discuss the finish alongside your Cumberland room's existing trim and furniture. The light at your own window helps you judge whether the fabric suits the space.

The consultation terms stated up front

Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover.

Our Process

Our Four Steps in Cumberland Homes

Your Cumberland window treatment project starts with a design visit. We'll work through the openings before the product is ordered, then plan installation around the confirmed order.

Discuss the rooms

We'll talk through what you'd like to change in your Cumberland home and which rooms belong in the first phase. Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover.

Measure the openings

We'll check the available mounting space and how the windows operate. Any recently replaced frames need to be measured in their finished condition.

Review the product plan

We'll discuss the fabric and the mounting arrangement before the order goes in. If an opening limits your first choice, we'll explain what that means for the treatment.

Confirm installation details

We'll confirm the order's installation plan and explain how to use the chosen treatments. Ask about access for maintenance if you're considering motorized shades.

Common Causes

What we see most often on Cumberland window treatments

Cumberland homeowners typically call us about these scenarios.

A Nursery That Became A Bedroom

The blackout that suited a baby now blocks the light a nine year old wants for reading. Rooms change function and the treatment can usually keep up by adding a top-down feature or a second layer rather than starting over. It is a small job that people delay for years.

Storefront Glare On The Square

A shop or an office facing the afternoon sun on the Cumberland square, with merchandise fading in the display and staff squinting at screens. Commercial fabrics with a flame rating and hardware that survives constant use are a different specification from a living room, and getting a residential product sold into that space means replacing it far too soon.

A Shade That Blocks The Window Opening

The treatment went in without anybody checking whether the window still needs to open, and now a room that used to get fresh air in October does not. It's a mount and clearance problem. We open every window at the measure specifically so this doesn't happen. Fixing it afterwards usually means a different mount and a row of filled holes.

Nobody Explained The Light Gap

An inside mounted shade was installed and the customer can see daylight down both sides. Nothing is faulty. Lutron publishes inside-mount gaps of about three quarters of an inch per side on their roller systems, and taller shades get more. Had that been stated in writing before the order, the room would have been designed differently.

Somebody Fell Off A Ladder

A homeowner tried to hang shades on a stair landing in a Cumberland two-story and decided halfway up that it was a bad idea. Angled openings, foyer glass and stairwell windows need proper access equipment. This is a very common reason a self-install project turns into a phone call. We bring the poles and the platforms because those openings are worth doing properly.

Dust On Every Slat

A house on a gravel road in Cumberland, or a home with pets, and the horizontal surfaces of a slatted blind collect everything. When the cleaning becomes a chore, a flat roller or a cellular removes the problem entirely. It's a legitimate reason to change product and it has nothing to do with how the blind looks.

How We Work

Five Stages, In This Order

Custom window treatments are made to your openings, so the order matters more than it does in most trades. This is how every Cumberland job runs.

1

Free In-Home Measure

Every opening gets three widths, three heights and a diagonal square check, because houses settle and an opening that is out of square is the difference between a shade that runs true and one that binds. Mounting depth gets read at the jamb. It all goes on paper before any product conversation starts.

2

Product and Fabric, In Your Own Light

Samples get looked at in the room they are going in, not under showroom lighting. This is where openness factor, inside versus outside mount, roll direction and material get decided, and where we tell you the light gap you are going to live with.

3

Written Scope and Contract

Opening by opening, with the mount type, the light gap, the operation and the total price in writing. Indiana requires a written contract on residential work over $150 under IC 24-5-11, and we would write one anyway.

4

Custom Fabrication

Your sizes go to the workroom. Two to five weeks is typical depending on product and finish, longer on specialty shapes and motorized configurations. You get the real date at the measure rather than a range.

5

Install and Walkthrough

Brackets anchored for the substrate they are going into, everything checked level and square, motor travel limits set and scenes built with you standing there. Then we show you how it all works and take the packaging with us.

"I had an amazing experience with The Window Valet from start to finish. Justin made the estimate and sales process easy and stress-free; he was professional, knowledgeable, and clearly explained all the options for our solar-powered skylight blinds. There was no pressure, just helpful guidance. The installation by Handy and Mark was equally impressive. They were punctual, efficient, and respectful of our home. Cathedral ceilings turn up in family rooms and primary suites from Valley Brook Farms to Cumberland Village, and screened porches and decks sit behind many houses from the 1980s and 1990s. Each of those rooms asks for a different treatment, so the crew measures every opening room by room and plans the sunrooms for heat as well as light.

Indiana Climate

Indiana Weather Affects Window Treatments Year Round

Indiana sees some of the most varied weather in the country. Cumberland homeowners live in IECC climate zone 5A, which carries a real cooling load in summer and a real heating load in winter. July averages a high near 85F, January averages a high near 36F with lows near 21F, and the muggy season runs from late May into late September. That is why the same window can be the hottest room in the house in July and the coldest in January.

Check the room at the hours you use it

Tell us when glare affects your Cumberland room. We'll look at which window is responsible and discuss a treatment for that use of the space.

Review privacy after dark

A fabric that gives a daytime view may leave the room visible after dark. We'll discuss that difference before you choose a shade for an occupied room.

Keep working windows accessible

We'll check the treatment against the sash and the controls you use to open the window. The finished arrangement needs to let you operate both.

If you're covering several openings in one room, we'll discuss how the treatments look together. Each opening still gets its own measurements.

Choosing the Right Treatment for Cumberland Rooms

An honest breakdown of the three we specify most often, and when each one is the right answer.

Cellular Shades

The one product in this trade with measured energy numbers behind it. Trapped air in the cells does the work, and DOE and ORNL testing found cellular shades saved up to 20 percent on heating energy and up to 15 percent on total heating and cooling against a bare window. In a Cumberland house that matters in January and again in July, which is unusual for one product. Single cell suits most rooms, double cell where the glass is large or the room runs cold. Top-down bottom-up gets you daylight and privacy at the same time.

Both seasonsInsulating$$
Solar & Roller Shades

What you reach for when the complaint is afternoon sun. Solar fabrics come in stated openness factors, and that number is the whole decision: a lower openness cuts more glare and more of the view, a higher one keeps the view and cuts less. On a west or south Cumberland window this is usually the honest answer rather than blackout, because blackout kills the room. Cassette or fascia hides the roll, and roll direction gets decided at the measure so the fabric does not foul a crank or a lock.

Glare controlKeeps the view$$$
Plantation Shutters

The one that stays with the house. Shutters are a finish rather than a covering, and they do not get replaced every few years. In Cumberland the material choice is technical rather than a matter of taste: composite and poly in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and sunrooms, because a four month humid season followed by a dry heated winter will move real hardwood, and hardwood only where the room stays conditioned. Louver size, frame style and divider rail get decided standing at your window.

Light Control

See What Each Fabric Does To The Light

Pick a fabric below and the window updates. It's a drawing rather than a photograph, so read it as a rough guide to what each family does in a Cumberland room, and to what it doesn't do.

Fabric type

Sheer, 10 percent openness

Ten percent of the weave is open, so you keep the view and most of the daylight. Glare drops a little. After dark, once your lamps are on, someone outside can read shapes through it, which is why this belongs on a view window rather than a bedroom.

Openness factor is printed on the fabric card, so you can compare one line against another before you order anything.

Keeps the viewNot private after dark

Solar, 5 percent openness

The usual pick for a west window or a covered porch. You can still read the yard through it, glare comes down noticeably, and the fabric intercepts a good share of the sun before it reaches you at four in the afternoon.

It also cuts the UV landing on floors and furniture. NFRC puts UV at roughly 40 to 60 percent of fading damage, so this slows fading rather than stopping it.

View and glare controlSlows fading

Solar, 3 percent openness

A tighter weave. The room goes dimmer and the view drops back to an outline. Choose it where the sun is the problem and the view is second, which around here usually means a west wall in July. That's a common call on this side of Indianapolis.

Openness affects how much you see out, not how private you are. A 3 percent fabric still shows silhouettes at night.

View becomes an outlineStrong glare control

Solar, 1 percent openness

Close to a solid fabric with a little view left in it. This is the strongest glare control in the solar family.

The trade is that it darkens the room on a gray January day too. Indianapolis averages a January high near 36F and the light is flat, so think about how the room reads in both seasons before you commit.

Darkest solar optionDim on gray days

Light filtering

No view through it. Daylight comes through the face diffused, so the room stays bright without a hot spot across the television or the kitchen island. This is the default for living spaces.

It isn't private in reverse at night. With the lamps on and the sun down, silhouettes still show.

No view through itBright without the glare

Room darkening

A denser fabric, usually with a liner behind it. Most of the light coming through the face is gone.

Light still arrives around the edges on an inside mount, so a room darkening shade gives you a dim room rather than a dark one. If someone in the house sleeps during the day, say so at the measure and we'll scope it differently.

Dim, not darkEdges stay bright

Blackout

The fabric itself passes essentially no light. What you'll still see is the perimeter. Lutron publishes an inside-mount light gap of about 3/4 inch per side on its Roller 20 and 64 shades, along with a standard factory deduction of 1/16 inch per side, and shades over 120 inches tall or past a 4:1 height-to-width ratio get larger gaps than that.

So if you need a genuinely dark bedroom, that gap has to be dealt with on purpose, either with side channels or by going outside mount. We tell you which one your opening can carry while we're still standing in the room.

Dark facePerimeter needs a plan

Openness factor is a measured fabric spec, so you can compare it line to line. The category names are not measured. One maker's room darkening can behave like another maker's light filtering, which is why the sample books come to the measure and get opened in the room they're going in, at the hour that room has the problem.

Cumberland was platted on July 7, 1831, when the National Road reached this point, and the historic district keeps about 47 acres of that original town. The National Register of Historic Places counts 91 buildings there as contributing, with development running from about 1831 to 1950. Folk Victorian houses and Bungalow or American Craftsman houses are the two styles that define the district. Landmarks include the Cumberland Bank building from 1907, a Masonic Lodge from about 1910, First Baptist Church from 1912 to 1913 and Miller's Lunch. The boundary runs roughly along Munsie, Welland, Heflin and Warehouse streets on the Marion County side of town, and the National Register listing dates to December 7, 2001. Brick ranches from 1966 and 1969 set the tone in Cumberland Heights, a platted subdivision whose first and second sections run along Granby Drive and Dunbar Drive. It sits on the Hancock County side of town in Sugar Creek Township, just east of the old town plat. The houses are single story brick homes with roughly 1,250 to 1,340 square feet of living area on lots near a third of an acre, with crawl spaces under them. The area also turns up under the name Cumberland Estates, so both names refer to the same streets. At about 60 years old, some of these houses have picked up newer windows or a sunroom along the way, and the two streets hold at least 38 addresses between them. Valley Brook Farms is one of the larger subdivisions on Cumberland's Hancock County side, and its county plat numbers lots as high as 258 in Section 7. Homes date from 1980 to 1990, and they sit on lots of roughly 0.37 to 0.56 acre, which gives the streets a spread out feel. Valley Brook Court and Sunrise Court are cul de sacs lined with ranch houses, while Huntington Drive has custom built two stories on corner lots. Stone and brick ranches make up most of the neighborhood, with the two stories the newest of the group. The neighborhood sits less than a mile north of the town center, in the Mt Vernon school area of Hancock County, and mature trees shade many of the lots. Yorkshire Boulevard anchors Glen Oaks Village, a subdivision on the Hancock County side of Cumberland in Sugar Creek Township, about a mile east of the historic core. Houses on the East, West and North branches of the boulevard sit in Sections 4 and 5 of the plat. The homes went up between 1990 and 1993 and are large for the area, with living areas from about 2,800 to just over 4,000 square feet, most of them two stories. Lots range from 0.39 acre to a 1.84-acre parcel, and Yorkshire Boulevard carries 59 addresses with an average lot of about 17,000 square feet. Some double lots connect to the Pennsy Trail, which runs through Cumberland on a former rail bed. View Glen Oaks Village window treatment details →
Buckley Boulevard sits at the center of Cumberland Village, a small subdivision in Buck Creek Township on the Hancock County side of town. It lies close to the town's center point and less than a mile northeast of the historic district, with seven addresses on Buckley Boulevard. The houses went up in 1990 and 1992 on lots of about 0.28 acre, and they're masonry, as 1.5-story homes of about 2,380 square feet and as all brick ranches of about 1,950 square feet on lots 80 feet wide and 152 feet deep, with partially finished basements. It's a quiet subdivision near the middle of town, and Harvest Glen and the newer Rockridge community both lie within a few blocks of Buckley Boulevard. Hartman Farms is a Marion County subdivision in the Warren Township part of Cumberland, with its lots inside the town limits. Sections 4 and 5 run along Calzia Lane and Washington Cove Lane, and the homes there were built in 1994 and 1995. They're one story houses of roughly 1,200 to 1,470 square feet on lots from about 6,200 to 8,700 square feet, with the average lot on Calzia Lane near 5,500 square feet. Calzia Lane holds 10 addresses and Washington Cove Lane 17. The two streets sit under half a mile north of the historic district, so the old town plat lies a few blocks to the south and the newer Hancock County subdivisions lie to the east. View Hartman Farms window treatment details →
Harvest Glen dates to the mid-1990s on the Hancock County side of Cumberland, with its houses on East Harvest Glen Drive built in 1996. The plat is numbered in sections, and the homes fall in the Mt Vernon school area on the north side of the county line. They come as ranches of about 1,400 square feet with three bedrooms on lots near 0.29 acre and as 1.5-story homes of about 1,800 square feet on lots 76 feet wide and 140 feet deep. The street sits about half a mile northeast of the historic district and a few blocks from Cumberland Village and the new Rockridge community, and Harvest Glen Drive holds 26 addresses in all, with an association that collects an annual charge. View Harvest Glen window treatment details →
Autumn Woods spreads across the north edge of Cumberland's Hancock County side, with its streets about 1.3 miles north of the town's center point. Section 1 on Autumn Road has houses from 2007, Section 3 on Pumpkin Patch Lane has houses from 2018, and houses from 2015 on Autumn Road fall between them, so building here ran for more than a decade. The homes are two stories, with about 2,230 to 2,440 square feet of living area on lots of roughly 6,800 to 7,600 square feet. Autumn Road holds 52 addresses and Pumpkin Patch Lane 22, monthly association dues go with the houses, and the neighborhood lies within the Mt Vernon school district's part of Hancock County. View Autumn Woods window treatment details →
Grant's Corner is among the newest pockets of Cumberland, with houses from 2024 and 2025 on Jackson Drive and Maxim Court. Olthof Homes is the builder, with two stories on Jackson Drive and one level villas on Maxim Court, a quiet cul de sac. The two stories run from about 2,440 to 2,530 square feet on lots of roughly 9,800 to 10,400 square feet, while the villas have 1,632 square feet on lots of about 5,600 square feet. Jackson Drive holds 6 addresses and Maxim Court 20, and the neighborhood sits on the Hancock County side, about 0.6 miles east of the town's center point. The name also appears as Grants Corner without the apostrophe, and monthly association dues go with both the two stories and the villas. View Grant's Corner window treatment details →
Taylor Morrison is building Rockridge on the Hancock County side of Cumberland, roughly a quarter mile northwest of the town's center point, with houses on Larimar Lane and Olivine Avenue still being finished in 2026 and a sales office on Galena Road. The builder's Legacy series runs from 1,572 to 3,537 square feet with three to five bedrooms, and its plans are open concept with flex rooms and lofts. Larimar Lane houses reach 3,037 square feet on lots of 7,800 square feet and 3,537 square feet with four bedrooms, and Olivine Avenue plans come in around 2,724 square feet on lots near 9,000 square feet. The community has a playground, a pond, a park and trails. View Rockridge window treatment details →
